How to Prepare for Your Fantasy Football League in Under 2 Hours

So you just got invited to a fantasy football league because someone dropped out and your buddy needs a favor.  You are at work and the draft is at night.  What do you do?

  1. Go to Football Outsiders and purchase their projections for $20.  I figure I could never do as much research as Aaron Schatz does at Football Outsiders.  If you have never heard of him, here is an interview with Aaron Schatz of Football Outsiders. His research is second to none and he constantly updates the projections based on what is currently going on unlike the fantasy football magazine you purchased 2 months ago.
  2. Once you have downloaded the projections, plug in your scoring system and how many players you start at each position.  This is very important because it will give you a players value based on their fantasy points over their baseline for that position.
  3. Then you run your report and now you have great updated projections for your fantasy team.
  4. Next you will want to find out which players are in their contract year .  I don’t really care about QBs in their contract year because they need so many things to go right.  The RBs that stick out on this list are Brandon Jacobs, Kevin Jones, and Rickey Williams.  The WRs that stick out are Marques Colston, Bobby Engram, and TJ Houshmandzadeh.
  5. Check a couple of sleeper articles and you are set to go.  If you are at the draft and not sure who to take, just take the player that has the most points above the baseline.

You know the big problem with Fantasy Football Drafts? It’s the person that even in the late 17th Round takes 8 – 10 minutes to make their pick ["Just take the Chief's Defense already; we know you want to."]. It’s like this from Round 1 all the way to their very last pick. You can suggest a time limit but it’s frowned upon because usually that person is a commish or their spouse. When it’s your turn if your pick is not blared out in twenty seconds, they’re the person saying “It’s your pick, it’s your pick.”

Drives me bananas every year (which is always my last year) to waste half a Saturday drafting players and paying good money only to lose it all to the other husband and wife team who swap players week in and week out so that one of them can make thier run through the season and have the best players on one team for the playoffs.

Yes, I’ve vented and wasted your time. Thanks for making me feel better.
