30 seconds left in a game with a 17 point lead and the ball. What do 31 out of the 32 teams in the NFL do? They run up the middle or kneel on it. Everyone except for the New England Patriots. Did this piss off Rex Ryan? Yes, it did. Bob Glauber over at Newsday reports that today when Rex Ryan was asked if the play showed disrespect, he said “Yes, I did. That’s why I called timeout at the end of the game. Give our team another chance. It was surprising. Things happen.” Bob Glauber speculates whether Belichick new about the call and it that situation its a guarantee he knew.
Now for me. I love this play call. Mainly because Brady and Moss are on my fantasy teams. Plays like this by the Patriots pretty much guarantee that Brady will be the number 1 fantasy QB yet again as Peyton will be riding the pine the last 2 games of the season as the Colts will already have homefield advantage clinched.
Now if they would have completed the play for a TD I bet there would have even been a bigger uproar. You have to hand it to Revis for playing all 48 minutes and blanketing Moss on that play like he did the whole game.

Is it just me or are some coaches making some terrible challenges these days. A perfect example is Mike Singletary.
With under 4 minutes to go the Packers have just got a first down. Ryan Grant had run out side and been tackled. Now to me it looks like he is tackled by the defender and then he falls on the defender and goes out of bounds. For some reason the referee runs the clock. Now the 49ers only have one timeout left and to me the fact that the Packers were able to run off another 30 seconds makes me think the Niners should have challenge the runner going out of bounds. Instead another play is run and Grant breaks off a long run. After seeing the reply right before the run I can see the runner was definitely out of bounds. Then fast forward to 2nd down. Brandon Jackson runs 8 yards. (By the way. Why couldn’t the niners stop the packers on the last drive. They had been doing it the whole 2nd half and they knew they were going to run.) It is 3rd and short. 3RD AND SHORT. NOT A FIRST DOWN. With one timeout Singletary decides to challenge the spot so he can save his team a foot. No ref is going to overturn a spot for a foot when its 3rd and short. 3rd and short is 3rd and short. Of course the Niners lose their timeout and the packers get the first down so it doesn’t matter.
But what happens if the 49ers stop them there. They now have wasted a timeout that would have been very useful. I can think of a few other instances in the past few games where Singletary has made the wrong challenge call as well. Personally I think the 49ers should higher a challenge consultant and it should not be Singletary’s call on the field. In fact every team in the NFL should have one. The coach has to worry about so much stuff on the field that it can be tough to make good decisions. This person should know the rulebook inside and out along with a full understanding of game situations in the NFL. And he should be sitting in a box with a 60 inch high def tv with his own producer/editor that has full access to all the TV feeds.
