US Ryder Cup hopes fade without Tiger

This could be a huge mismatch at Valhalla.

The United States Ryder Cup team needs to play better than they have in many years in order to take world golf supremacy from the Europeans. Led by Phil Mickelson, the Americans have not faired well in match play. The combined record of Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Stewart Cink, Chad Campbell, Justin Leonard and Kenny Perry is 19-37-17, while the Europeans have a record of 41-27-12.

Padraig Harrington, Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood lead the way for Team Europe, who could run away from a less experienced US squad to win the 37th Ryder Cup.

ESPN’s Rick Reilly thinks the Americans have a chance. They might, but it’s very slim. They don’t have a margin for error.

US Captain Paul Azinger will have his hands full, especially with the absense of Tiger Woods. Even the top golfer’s presence wouldn’t guarantee a US win, and without Woods, they are a long shot.

Ryder Cup golf is some of the most exciting, because of the rivalry. But Mickelson needs to play major winning good, and stop taking goofy chances on tough shots. When Mickelson is great, he is amazing. When he stinks, it’s all down hill…and fast.

While I’d love to see a US win here on our home turf, the Europeans have the edge and it’s up to them to give the Americans a chance to seal one.

7 Reasons why Golf Should Be an Olympic Sport

As I watched the Olympics this summer I decided golf needs to be an Olympic sport.  To me it seems like it would be a great fit.  I know there are a ton of politics that surround olympic sports and golf is an expensive sport but if trampoline is an Olympic sport I think Golf should be.  Here are my reasons Golf should be a sport:

  1. Its already an international competition
  2. It would be a great team sport
  3. The sport would grow faster internationally if it became an olympic sport
  4. Tiger fist pumping for Gold
  5. Phil Mickelson always getting Bronze
  6. Seeing a golfer from Iceland make the olympics
  7. Watching Jack Nicklaus coach the US Golf Team
